09/06/21 ANOTHER PERFECT WEEKEND MAKES A FATHERS DAY GIFT

This past father's day weekend Team Vammus Racing attended the third round of the RACE Superseries. This event was held on the Pro Circuit at Shannonville Motorsport park.

Saturday greeted the team with rain but also with mild conditions. The rain turned out to be light all day making for consistent conditions, and decent for rain tires. Vammus got down to business in morning practice and put in some good laps on the wet track in preparation for the day's heat races.

In the Superbike Heat Race Vammus got a great start and charged hard in the rain, eventually running down multi time champion Frank Trombino. In all the exuberance Vammus nearly high sided off the fast right turn after the back straight. After a great save Vammus settled for 6th place behind Trombino. For the Thunder Heat RACE Vammus took the hole shot and won the race unchallenged. For the last Final of the Day, the Heavyweight class, after a mediocre start Vammus rode a conservative race and finished in second place.

Sunday's weather conditions were a complete turnaround as it got hot and sunny. This was a welcome change as so far this season all the races have been held in bitter conditions.

Sunday morning practice showed of things to come as Vammus lapped under the Heavyweight lap record and turned in his personal best times.

The first Final of the Day was the Heavyweight Class. Many called this race the most exciting of the weekend and probably one of the best races in ages. Vammus launched off the start in Second place. Going into the hairpin turn for the first time Jim Proulx on his Yamaha R1 Superbike dived to the inside putting Vammus back into third place. This would set the stage for the entire race. Vammus got a great drive and passed two riders taking the lead for the first time. For the next several laps a seesaw battle took place with multiple lead changes per lap involving Vammus, Proulx and Dean Plater also on a Yamaha R1 Superbike.

Making things difficult for Vammus was a malfunctioning shifter that caused the bike to pop out of gear. With every missed shift Vammus would lose the lead he had worked hard to gain.

All three riders ran under lap record pace and Plater held the lead for a lap until he ran wide around a back marker and Proulx and Vammus shot back by. Lap after lap Vammus would try a late braking pass into the hairpin. On the drive out both riders would come together and would battle down the straight with riders actually contacting and pushing off each other. On the final lap Vammus would make this pass stick as he fought Proulx off down the back straight. Vammus held on to the line with both R1 riders following nose to tail with no gap.

It was a triumphant win for Vammus after such a hard fought battle. On the cool down lap Vammus bike popped out of gear one last time and broke the chain off. Obviously this was extremely lucky the race was not one lap longer! Plater would tow Vammus back to the pits and then in a great sportsman gesture Plater gave Vammus his bike to ride around for the Victory Lap.

With the win Vammus extended his lead over Proulx and Plater in the Heavyweight Championship.

The team worked hard before the next race to put a new chain on and attempt to repair the shifter. Going out in the Thunder Race Vammus took the second Victory of the day leading from flag to flag. Unfortunately the shifter continued to pop out of gear and the team were forced to retire the bike missing out on the Superbike Final.

With all things in proper perspective it was still a perfect weekend and a father's day gift to the Father/ Son Vammus Team. Derek would dedicate the win to his Dad on the Victory Podium.

The 1098 Ducati continues to suit Vammus better than any other bike he has ridden.

In other great News, Thunder Class sponsor John Darrigo, of Coventry General Contracting, has come on board to support Vammus Racing as a team sponsor.
